A major milestone for autonomous public transport in the Netherlands. On October 22, the third generation ParkShuttle in Rivium welcomed its one millionth passenger. A proud moment for everyone involved and another confirmation that autonomous mobility is already part of everyday public transport.

Since 1999, 2getthere and Transdev have worked together to develop autonomous transport in Rivium, connecting the business district with Kralingse Zoom metro station in Rotterdam. What started as a pioneering project has developed into a fully operational public transport system, with the third generation continuing that journey.

Today, six fully electric autonomous vehicles, each accommodating 22 passengers, transport more than 1,850 passengers daily. The system covers a 1.8 kilometre route with six stops, providing a direct connection to Rotterdam’s public transport network.

From pioneering technology to everyday mobility

Reaching one million passengers with the third generation ParkShuttle is about more than passenger numbers. It demonstrates what happens when autonomous technology, infrastructure and daily operations come together in a transport system that people can rely on.

As Niels Verlinden, Head of Business Development at 2getthere, explains:

“One million passengers with the new generation ParkShuttle proves that autonomous driving is no longer an experiment. It is simply public transport.”

And the journey continues. With approximately 5,000 new homes planned in Rivium by 2035, reliable public transport will play an increasingly important role in connecting residents, businesses and the wider region.
